Aitor Throup: "New Object Research"22/06/2012
Aitor Throup, the critically acclaimed menswear designer, has announced the launch of his eponymous product line. At an announcement hosted by Sarah Mower and Tim Blanks at London Collections: Men on the 17th of June, Throup revealed to an audience of influential press and buyers the launch of the highly anticipated range titled 'New Object Research'.
The offering will consist of 22 ready to wear archetypes, and will be presented in January 2013. It was also announced that there will be an extended preview of products in October ahead of the launch. One complete outfit from the launch will be presented and available exclusively through Dover Street Market, with whom the designer is planning an exciting event to coincide with Frieze Art Fair in London in October, 2012.
Arguably the most significant of Throup's creations at the presentation was his design manifesto, which he also distributed and referred to throughout his speech. In it, he highlights his personal focus lying between the juncture of fine art and product design, and that fashion happens merely through appropriation. He also talks about his priority being to invent new objects through designing concepts and processes, and resolving those through product design. The manifesto also explains each of the 5 separate existing concepts, which were also presented in sculptural form as part of the 'New Object Research' exhibition.
