Fantastic Trailer by Cheyrl Baxter

25/06/2012

Architect Cheyrl Baxter has taken inspiration for her latest project from air dancers – those moving inflatable figures used to get your attention.

Named the Fantastic Trailer, this mobile structure is designed to elicit a connection between the architect and those experiencing the space in and around the formation, through highlighting sound, movement, texture and light, as well as a sense of transience.

The structure, with the bottom of a camper trailer as its foundation, can be moved to different locations, allowing for on-going connections to be made with different audiences, as well as letting new environments act upon the structure.

Airflow from industrial fans keeps the columns upright, and produces a continuous whirring sound. Movement is caused by the fans and any outside air pressure or touch, and organza floats in the space between, moving in and out with the rhythm of the fans.

At night, the ghostly draft columns are lit-up, creating an entirely different vision, and evolving the structure into some sort of giant glowing sea-creature.
