SPLASHH have all the makings of a successful young band. Catchy pop songs, a solid work ethic, good looks and charm, and a confidence that announces they are clearly aware of all of the above. Having played and written music with frontman Sasha Carlson for years in Auckland, it was of no surprise to me to hear the calibre of the band's early demos, sent through from London following his departure from the antipodes. The potential mass pop appeal was immediately apparent. These were bedroom recordings for sure; drenched in reverb, vocals fuzzily la-la'd into a macbook microphone, and guitars with so much feedback I could still hear the riffs the next day, but one thing was for certain - they were hits.
SPLASHH are Sasha Carlson, Toto Vivian, Jacob Moore and Thomas Beal. The first three are "from the beach" - Thomas is from Wolverhampton - though the band now make East London their stomping ground. Building on their solid foundation as song writers, the boys have stepped onto the stage to play a sprinkling of shows around England to the rapturous delight of new fans and unsuspecting punters. A raw, youthful energy and unique reinterpretation of last decade's guitar-band cool mean they have struck a chord (yup, pun) with listeners young and old. They're trendy, sure, but they're also trend-setters. SPLASHH are post new.
The band's self-marketing campaign has worked a treat so far; aided by a handful of creative friends the've released a couple of lo-fi D.I.Y. videos that perfectly capture their washy 90's leanings and nonchalant attitude. Singles 'All I Wanna Do' and 'Need It' have not gone unnoticed by the mainstream music media either - a host of publications have rushed to announce the arrival of the freshest new band on the scene, including the Guardian ("Band of the Summer") and NME - who labelled the group as the most exciting to emerge from the capital this year.
So what's SPLASHH all about? Well, you could watch the videos below, or head down to one of their shows, but we wanted the inside scoop. POST NEW spoke to the band to find out.
POST NEW: Who are SPLASHH?
SPLASHH: SPLASHH are a 4 piece rock n roll band based in London, England
PN: How did the band form?
S: I [Sasha] spent part of the summer at Totos parents house in Byron Bay. I told him I wanted to move back to London and start making music. As soon as we met up we recorded our first three songs and put them online. When it started getting attention we asked our friends Beal and Jacob to join. We played our first show on May 2nd and the band was formed!
PN: Who or what influences your music?
S: We're influenced by everything around us. Musically we enjoy artists of all genres that create excitement.
PN: Can you tell us about your recent single releases? Can we expect an extended player in the near future?
S: 'All I Wanna Do' has been bouncing around the net for the last few months and has just been released on Jen Long of BBC Radio 1's cassette label Kissability. We are releasing another single called 'Need It' on LuvLuvLuv records in July. For now we are writing songs all the time but there aren't any real plans for an album. Yet.
PN: What excites you about the London music scene?
S: There's so much good music going on over here at the moment. London has always been one of the epicentres of pop culture and by being here, it means you have access to everything, as everything passes though.
PN: I guess there's a certain stigma attached to that word 'scene' these days. It can suggest pigeonholing. People seem to move and operate in 'collectives' these days… Is there more to the SPLASHH collective than just music?
S: Yeah, I reckon so. We're surrounded by a creative group of friends who are keen to be involved with each others projects. Everything we do artistically is all done by us or our friends. This is what keeps SPLASHH SPLASHH!
PN: What's the best thing about being an up and coming band in London?
S: It's all pretty early days.. We're just happy we've been able to play some good shows so far, and have some more to look forward to over the summer. We're just having fun!
PN: What does it take to be an innovator in a digital world saturated by people trying to stake their claim musically?
S: We couldn't really tell you that... All we've done is write music that gets us vibing and shared it with everyone on the net. I guess the main thing is to keep providing good stuff.
PN: What's inspiring the band at the moment?
S: The Sun (when it's out). Girls. Music. Fun!
PN: Why are SPLASHH the post-new?
S: Shucks! We don't think too much about WHY we do what we do, we really just go for what we enjoy. Maybe that's why...
