Sam Samore: Library of Appearances08/08/2012
Team Gallery is set to play host to its first solo presentation of work by American artist Sam Samore, with separate exhibitions installed in each of the gallery’s spaces. Library of Appearances presents new large-scale color photographs and recent short films at the Gallery’s 83 Grand Street location. Concurrently, their 47 Wooster Street space will present 1973, a second show by Samore made up of selections from two historical bodies of work.
Samore's new works are vast fauvist-colored photographs of lips and eyes presented singularly as well as vertically stacked in pairs and towers. Dramatized and theatrical, there is also something erotic about the works, based on our fixation with the sensations associated with the depicted body parts. However, this quality is softened with blur and grain, to become somewhat romantic.
In the second gallery, the artist has installed a triptych of new short films: Archipelago of Enigmas (2012), Compendium of Perplexities (2011), and Glossary of Delusions (2010). Though screened together, the films are individual, and the non-linear compositions are evocative of the changing nature of the self.
// September 12th – October 27th 2012. Reception on Wednesday September 12th at 6:00PM
