Heavy Vibrations - A Musical Portrait of South African Youth

02/05/2012

Let’s start this off with a bit of a confession: I am a white English writer with South African permanent residency who’s spent the last 15 years living in England, America and here in South Africa. My passion is street culture and everything that comes free with it, and right here right now South Africa is a gold mine for original, fresh-to-death, commercial-free culture, but that may well change in the not-too-distant future.

Tenement Cafe

Tenement Cafe, the brainchild of musician Ino Hidefumi and his wife Hiroki is almost a home away from home. The location of Tenement Cafe, a more traditional part of Ebisu, Tokyo reflects the concept of the cafe while combining this with a more modern edge. The organic, vintage interior design combined with Ino's music playing in the background defines the comfortable atmosphere on both floors of the cafe. In addition to a marvelous menu which is a unique combination of Western and Japanese food, you can easily enjoy peaceful lunch or drinks with friends in the evening.

On Tour With Blouse

25/04/2012

In early December I received an unexpected email from my friend Paul Roper, who lives in Portland, Oregon. It said that he would be touring with a band called Blouse through Italy in February, and that he hoped we could meet up. The last time I had seen Paul had been over a year ago when we had very briefly played ping-pong on a snowy night in Dalston, so the prospect excited me. I penciled in a trip to Bologna’s Covo Club, then promptly forgot all about it.

Justin R. Saunders is a curator, not a curator in the traditional sense, but as the founder and eye behind jjjjound.com he is the new face of how we view content and imagery, how we are inspired and what inspires us. A simple idea, but something that not just anyone could do...this isn't Tumblr or pinterest, this is jjjjound.com. We know Justin has taste so we asked him what he likes to taste for our latest recipe.

This is Noise 001: A Silent Flute Mixtape

Music has and will forever continue to help shape and progress the culture of any one sub culture. From Miles Davis, to Malcolm McLaren music has been vital in telling the stories of the time, allowing those without a voice to be heard loud and clear. With the every growing diversity of today we've decided to hand the reigns over to a few select music personalities in an ongoing series This Is Noise. The selections will be as eclectic as the DJs themselves.

Cacti and Conch

27/03/2012

Sang Bleu posted about a intriguing event put on in collaboration with the Freie Universität that we just had to share with you. Based on John Cage’s scores Branches (for amplified plant sounds and 4 performers, 1976) and Inlets (for water-filled conch shells and 3 performers, 1977) - a group of artists created instruments out of cacti and water filled conches and played for hours in a huge greenhouse in Berlin.
