Apartamento Magazine Interview

Talking print with EIC Marco Velardi

To call Apartamento an interiors magazine seems like an understatement, it is a look into the lives of some of the worlds most fascinating creatives, their incredible homes just happen to help tell the story. The bi-annual is an interesting beast, started with no set plan as to how it would grow, no stringent rules in terms of content or subjects, however the magazine has grown organically and been going from strength to strength since it's launch in 2008, with no end in sight.

Drawing a Blank (On Forgetting, Refusal, Censure and Impotence)

"I'm explaining myself. I'm talking to you with a drink in one hand. At the open bar in the lobby of the reception for what's-his-name. Except when I get to my point I pause. There's a name I'm missing. Maybe it's yours. What I've forgotten is perhaps more important than what I've said. And you're politely waiting. And I stutter some half-sentences that don't come close to what I meant. But you nod anyway. Later that night at home in bed in the dark I'll recall just what it was I wanted to say.

Shayne Oliver Interview

Hood By Air

Hood by Air was founded by Shayne Oliver in 2006 in the same way almost all great cult labels are started, by making tee's for friends. The brand has stayed true to its roots and remained hard to find despite being worn by the likes of A$AP Rocky and Venus X. The brand's juxtaposing world of Hood meets Fashion was around well before the fashion world caught wind of its influence, but it's the brand's influence which to me makes it one of the most interesting brands today. I spoke to Shayne Oliver to get a little more insight.

Michael Parekowhai: On First Looking into Chapman's Homer

14/07/2012

At the edge of the earthquake disfigured red-zone in Christchurch, New Zealand, are two imposing bronze bulls atop grand pianos. Overlooking this indelibly altered landscape, in a building that managed to survive the destruction, is a Steinway piano, deep red and carved with Maori motifs. These artworks, which make up the Michael Parekowhai’s exhibition, On First Looking Into Chapman’s Homer, have returned to New Zealand after taking up residence first at the 54th Venice Biennale, and then musée du quai Branly in Paris.

Daisuke Obana Interview

Talking N.HOOLYWOOD

Japanese label N.HOOLYWOOD has been a central figure in Ura Harajuku for more than a decade now with designer Daisuke Obana's unique vision defined by his interest in vintage clothing. One element of Obana's philosophy that is really attractive is his ability to reference in each collection, and what better example is his fall/winter 2012 collection entitled "KAPITON", a homage to iconic Lost Generation author Ernest Hemmingway. Obana welcomed me in to his atelier to discuss the history of N.

Reading Ed Ruscha

12/07/2012

The work of Ed Ruscha is not easily allocated to any one established category. Assigned to the pop movement in his early career, and later to conceptual art, the artist has never confined himself to one medium. There are, however, some constants displayed in the his work; namely, writing. Whether in print form or painted onto canvas, words are a thread that run through from his earliest beginnings to the present.
