Marina Abramović and The Institute

31/01/2013

One of the most important and influential artists of her generation, Marina Abramović's performance art over the last four decades has seen her act out such extremities as repeatedly stabbing her own hand, had a stranger point a loaded gun at her head, sat in silence for 700 hours, set herself on fire and act out her own funeral. Her latest project is arguably her largest and something she sees as the culmination of a life's work: the opening of the Marina Abramović Foundation for the Preservation of Performance Art.

INFRA

Interactive artist Chris Shen took over London's 18 Hewett Street gallery last week with a new installation, titled, INFRA. Highlighting the unseen technology in our digital landscape as well as offering an examination of changing television viewing practices, INFRA is made up of 625 discarded remote controls that Shen has programmed so that the infrared light emitted by each can be controlled. The remote-grid is linked to a live TV stream which can be controlled and watched through the sculpture. The catch? The image can only be seen through infrared goggles.

Ben Jones: The Video

22/01/2013

The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Ben Jones: The Video, the West Coast solo museum debut of the artistʼs work, on view at MOCA Pacific Design Center from November 3, 2012, through February 24, 2012. The exhibition features new videos and paintings that build upon the artist’s previous work using the extracted and abstracted forms of technology and pop symbols of our time to create irreverent, surrealistic, and introspective narratives and environments, often defined by their kaleidoscopic arrays of day-glo colors.

Opening this February, Sadie Coles of London presents an exhibition of new paintings by Richard Prince, his first exhibition in the capital since his ‘Continuation’ retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in 2008. Showing fourteen expansive canvases, the new body of work will build upon a series of works inspired by Picasso which was unveiled at the Museo Picasso, Malaga, in 2012. Each canvas features an over-painted ink-jet print of a single female figure or giantess – a symbolic hybrid of Prince and Picasso.

Imaginary View

Imaginary View is the first exhibition of large-scale photographs and accompanying sculpture by Dan Tobin Smith and Rachel Thomas, featuring scenes of massive stage sets crafted from polystyrene, assembled and shot on 5 x 4mm black and white film in various studios around London. One such set features an 8 x 8m 'lake' of milk, in which is reflected the fantastical geometry of a ruined island city.

CONFETTISYSTEM: 100 Arrangements

18/01/2013

CONFETTISYSTEM, the artist duo of Nicholas Andersen and Julie Ho, has created an immersive environment inspired by the mechanics of theatrical staging and fly systems for MoMA PS1’s two-story gallery. Entitled 100 Arrangements, the work evokes theatrical scrims and curtains and features new and older design elements by Andersen and Ho that are suspended from above and can be adjusted to varying heights to produce nearly endless permutations.

16/01/2013

This January, interactive artist Chris Shen will repurpose 625 discarded remote controls into a free-standing infrared light sculpture at Protein's 18 Hewett Street concept space in East London. Eugene Polley's invention of the TV remote control in 1955 changed the nature of television forever, and with INFRA, Shen aims to mark the evolution of television technology.

Hassan Rahim: The Air Above This Ground

15/01/2013

Opening this Friday at HVW8 Art & Design Gallery in Los Angeles, Hassan Rahim presents his new exhibition, The Air Above This Ground. Bringing together high and low themes in a way that conjures vague childhood memories and adolescent fantasies, Rahim utilizes photography, collage and mixed media to create bold contextual pieces which both appeal to and alarm their audience. Themes of competition, excellence and the decadence that comes with them are present, and expanded on in a way that exposes the curious details behind them.
