Consuming Culture

Part 2

I see all sides to everything: the downtrodden, the rage, the free spirits rising and wrapping themselves around everything, tying it all up in a knot. Like Scratch Lee Perry, I came I saw I conquered, but it was only when I’d bounced from Moscow to the Cape Flats to Jo’burg to Sao Paulo to Shanghai to Gurgaon to Jerusalem to Hastings that I began to understand the difference; to get that there are so many disparate strands to our glorious global culture that – often-or-not these days – is used to peddle sneakers, soda, and other digital dreams.

Gerhard Richter: PAINTING 2012

17/08/2012

Marion Goodman Gallery will present an exhibition of Gerhard Richter's new work in September under the title, PAINTING 2012. Included in the exhibition will be Gerhard Richter's Strip Paintings and a recent sculpture, 6 Standing Glass Panels. With these works, the artist challenges traditional concepts of the medium of painting and continues the dialogue between painting and the glass works which have been a constant in his work since the mid-1960s.

Curtis Kulig Paints colette

17/08/2012

Renowned street artist Curtis Kulig stopped by Parisian store colette this week and painted their garage door. Known for his 'love me' tag, Kulig used spray paint to write 'love' in cursive script across the white door, along with the store's name. Take a look at the work above.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 18, 6-8PM.

Consuming Culture

Part 1

So, it’s one thing to discover that culture and consumption have become intertwined, and make a call on that, but being a positive forward-looking oake I wanted to see what authentic stuff was out there that wasn’t just a brand moment, but something, well, ‘real’. It’s sounds rather mental to be here in 2012 and talking about looking for the real. A bit like when Paul Simon went out to look for ‘America’ or when Hunter looked back to see the high-tide mark left by the broken-wave of the 60s counter-culture.

Today's Special by Julia Ziegler-Haynes

15/08/2012

Fascinated with the subject of the last meal, Brookyln-based artist and chef Julia Ziegler-Haynes has illustrated the "special meals" requested by 24 death row inmates, in her new book Today's Special. The intention in creating this work is to examine the human condition through the contrast of capital punishment and the forgiving gesture of granting one last request. The resulting images are quasi-portraits of each individual.

Taking its title and launching point from Swedish design reformer and social theorist Ellen Key's landmark book, Century of the Child: Growing by Design 1900 - 2000 is the first large-scale overview of the modernist preoccupation with children and childhood as a paradigm for progressive design thinking.

Freaks Freearchitects Interview

FREAKS

In 2007, three young French architects began to work alongside each other on a number of interesting projects, a talented collective who were to eventually become FREAKS Freearchitects. Guillaume Aubry, Cyril Gauthier and Yves Pasquet possess just the right amount of drive, good humor and an impeccable eye for design that has seen them rise to the forefront of their field, whilst simultaneously exploring new and exciting territories; namely, installation.
