3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2013

29/06/2012

Phillip Lim put the cool in karate for his Spring runway collection which was built around a culture clash of Japanese and Brazilian traditions; what Lim calls "Nipo-Brazilerio sub-cultures". Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was clearly a strong influence for the collection which saw relaxed-yet-sharp silhouettes stroll down the runway. Of course, these pieces still maintained Lim's precision and attention to detail; the smarter trousers, in particular, were of an immaculate fit. Things loosened up a bit on top with shirts and jumpers worn (draped) casually askew.

Raf Simons Spring 2013

28/06/2012

The incomparable Raf Simons was out in full force and feeling reflective for his Spring 2013 showing. This latest range featured all the Raf staples we have come to know and love over the 17 years he has been designing menswear. Thigh bearing shorts, impeccable tailored outerwear and oversized tees adorned with painted faces by L.A. artist Brian Calvin were all present. The pressure is not off for Raf in Paris yet however, he shows his first haute couture collection for Dior in just a few days time.

Mugler Spring 2013 Menswear

28/06/2012

Mugler's Spring 2013 menswear collection took outside-the-box tailoring to new heights and matched it with cool pastel colours and darkened elegance to produce one of the highlight presentations of the season. An aquatic theme was apparently adhered to, with Creative Director Nicola Formichetti making the decision to go offline this season, saying, “under the sea is the only place we can’t have Wi-Fi”. Quite.

Alexander Wang Spring 2013 Menswear

28/06/2012

Alexander Wang's seemingly effortless take on casual menswear takes a dark turn in his Spring 2013 collection. Relaxed but proportionate fits take T-shirts, sweats and knits to new levels, and the inclusion of two frankly deadly black baseball shirts are a real highlight. A black and white palette reigns supreme for Wang this season, with the only diversion being found in bright red accented sleeves and trimming on select pieces. Trousers are slim but roomy, shorts; kneelength.

SILENT by Damir Doma: Mens SS13

26/06/2012

The lush green foliage of an outdoor setting provides a perfect environment to showcase the SILENT by Damir Doma Mens SS13 collection. The range leans toward the utilitarian, although certainly not in a rigid, military sense - the designs still follow the same soft lines and fluidity that the SILENT line has made its signature. Oversized knits and T-shirts and low-crotched trousers and shorts provide all the comfort one needs for the warmer months, while the color palette for SS13 maintains an element of refined sleekness and sophisticated cool.

Jil Sander Spring 2013

25/06/2012

Spring 2013 marks the first outing for Jil Sander back at the helm of her namesake label, after seven years away. Presenting the range in a fittingly nostalgic space, the tower of the Castello Sforzesco, where she showed her first men's collection 15 years ago. It may seem daunting for anyone to follow on from the incredible stint Raf Simons had at the fashion house, but Sander was apparently thrilled with her latest homecoming.

Carven Spring/Summer 2013

24/06/2012

Guillaume Henry's Carven presentation at Pitti was all about presenting the brand not the collection, describing the show as "Paris meets Firenze." In a hired velodrome Henry treated guests to a five course meal as they watched a race of costumed waiters, commentated by an Italian announcer. The waiters were soon joined by models decked out in the Spring/Summer 2013 collection and the extravaganza ending with a live Florentine military band.

Band of Outsiders Interview

Speaking with Scott Sternberg

Band of Outsiders, the cult fashion label, was born in Los Angeles almost ten years ago, started by a young man with absolutely no fashion experience but a good eye, impeccable taste and a passion that was right on time. Eventually growing to include two women’s collections aptly called ‘Boy’ and ‘Girl’ with aesthetics that perfectly match the names, and finally ‘This is Not a Polo Shirt’. Scott Sternberg was the mind and vision behind Band of Outsiders and we were lucky enough to recently catch up with him in his spacious Hollywood studio.
