Stephen Powers "A Word is Worth A Thousand Pictures"
28/08/2012Seven years after his last solo exhibition in New York, Steven Powers is set to exhibit a new body of work at Joshua Liner Gallery, entitled, A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures. In this new series, the prolific artist will present a panoramic assemblage of paintings that will occupy the entire breadth of the gallery. A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures will consist of a multitude of enamel on aluminum paintings, ranging from 10-x-8 inches to 10-x-10 feet. Known for his public artworks that fuse aspects of painting, graffiti, word, and image, Powers' work is both collaborative and personal. Starting with his Love Letter projects in the United States, he has brought his unique style of visual communication to the masses, inspired by conversations with community residents.
Growing out of the Philadelphia graffiti scene, Powers turned his hand to sign painting and continues to be influenced by the art form, as well as by pop and a love for the human face. His works are witty and strike an element of often satirical wit, turning old bromides on their heads to achieve new insight.
A Word is Worth A Thousand Pictures will run September 6 to September 29, 2012.
