Kinfolk Interview
Kinfolk was formed in 2008 by four friends from New York, Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo. Born out of a desire to create the products and experiences that they could imagine in their minds but couldn’t find in the market, the creative collective has blossomed from its beginnings as a boutique design team, Ways & Means, to a multi-faceted, multi-national projection of their original vision, encompassing their design wing, Kinfolk Studios, artisan bike building, by way of The Kinfolk Bicycle Co., and the opening of two unique lounge/café spaces in New York and Tokyo.

Tenement Cafe
Tenement Cafe
26/04/2012Tenement Cafe, the brainchild of musician Ino Hidefumi and his wife Hiroki is almost a home away from home. The location of Tenement Cafe, a more traditional part of Ebisu, Tokyo reflects the concept of the cafe while combining this with a more modern edge. The organic, vintage interior design combined with Ino's music playing in the background defines the comfortable atmosphere on both floors of the cafe. In addition to a marvelous menu which is a unique combination of Western and Japanese food, you can easily enjoy peaceful lunch or drinks with friends in the evening.

Ben Shaffer Interview
Nike are a sportswear company before anything else, unique in that their sole purpose is to create products which will enhance the performance of its athletes. The rewards of their absolute goal to innovate however are what we and its competitors look at and covet. Their ability to create products with talkability, their groundbreaking approach to marketing, the unique nature of their aesthetic design, and their relevance in the market and even wider culture. All of this however is merely a result of their efforts and talents in working to innovate.

On Tour With Blouse
On Tour With Blouse
25/04/2012In early December I received an unexpected email from my friend Paul Roper, who lives in Portland, Oregon. It said that he would be touring with a band called Blouse through Italy in February, and that he hoped we could meet up. The last time I had seen Paul had been over a year ago when we had very briefly played ping-pong on a snowy night in Dalston, so the prospect excited me. I penciled in a trip to Bologna’s Covo Club, then promptly forgot all about it.

Cindy Sherman at Metro Pictures
Cindy Sherman at Metro Pictures
23/04/2012Metro Pictures presents a new Cindy Sherman exhibition, presenting large scale works depicting "outsized enigmatic female figures standing in striking isolation before ominous landscapes." Sherman created the works by photographing the landscapes and then manipulating them in photoshop to not only combine the photographs of her in costume but also achieve the painterly effect and obscure perspective in the works. The series was developed from an insert Sherman created for Pop magazine using clothing from the Chanel archive.
