blackmaps Interview

31/01/2012

It’s a rough time out there for the music industry. You need to be offering something truly unique and covetable in order to sell music. With the download capabilities proliferating everywhere, why does anyone need to actually purchase a tangible physical recording, either in CD or Vinyl format? This is something that Max Mackee and his partners considered carefully before starting their label blackmaps. There needs to be a package. An attractive object or just something that begs to be owned as well as great music.

David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture is the first major exhibition of new landscapes by David Hockney RA, presented by The Royal Academy of Arts. The exhibition explores Hockney's "long exploration and fascination with the depiction of landscape" over a 50 year period. Hockney keeps us on our toes by also presenting a series of ipad drawings and a series of new film works which were produced using 18 cameras. This is a must see.

Galerie Perrotin presents the exhibition Dan Flavin 'An Installation', in collaboration with L&M Arts. The exhibition opened to the public on 14 January and will remain open in Paris till 3 March 2012.

Dan Flavin started making three-dimensional monochromes with mounted or barred fluorescent tubes or light bulbs in 1961 that he referred to as 'Icons', even though he contested any mystical or religious reference in his approach.

It's art for pleasure, whether it be her's or the audiences. Her first solo record "Wet Look" is due out very soon and her pop porn video pieces (SoftRock 1 & 2) have just been shown at the George Pompidou Center in Paris. Terence Koh Interview

I've always been intrigued by Terence Koh, while his work's monotone aesthetic and conceptual juxtapositions fit well with me, its always been the man behind the work that interested me to find out more. His work has often shocked the fine art world, but thats just Koh, he's just being honest and working through his processes.

Thom Browne Fall 2012 Runway

24/01/2012

If there is one thing Thom Browne never fails to do, its bring a sense of humor, theatre and utmost entertainment to the catwalk. The designers Fall 2012 collection was on steroids, literally. Described by Browne as "a scenario where Punks face off against Jocks." Like Rocky Horror opened a high school. Playing with proportion, masks and men's midriffs - its a tough call as to who would come out on top in this "face off."

Mjolk Mini-Interview

24/01/2012

Located in Toronto, Canada, Mjölk is a lifestyle boutique with a difference. Carrying a carefully curated selection of design goods from Scandinavia and Japan, it's uniqueness lies in it's honesty, When owners John Baker and Juli Daoust say they look to everyday life to find inspiration for the products they carry and that they take time in curating their products - they genuinely mean it.. this is a store packed full of the best lifestyle goods, not a store pushing a lifestyle.
