We love this new collaborative project which see’s Levi's Made & Crafted and San Francisco-based creative publication THE THING Quarterly come together, Moment To Moment draws on a concept dreamed up by 19th Century French poet Stéphane Mallarmé and first brought to fruition by visual artist Dan Graham in the 1960s.
Challenging preconceptions of contemporary communication and blurring the lines between the expectations and assumptions of visual mediums, Moment To Moment was conceived as “a magazine (of sorts) that happens in real time” and aims to be a reminder “about the good things that happen when we slow down and experience the details around us”.
The project consists of more than 15 creative commissions spanning video, painting, animated gifs, photography and essays, appearing in unexpected urban locations in cities around the world.
The work of interdisciplinary artist Harrell Fletcher, best known to us for his participatory website Learning To Love You More co-created by Miranda July, has been featured on billboards and at bus stops and subway stations, with Fletcher himself physically accompanying his visual contributions with a series of walks through the neighbourhoods where his images are displayed – a conversation through the often overlooked details of an unfamiliar place.
The short film 'Rock' by John Herschend, commissioned directly by Levi's Made & Crafted and starring THE THING Quarterly's managing editor Sarah Simon, encapsulates not just the overarching project theme - the rewards of a slower pace and the understated beauty of reflection - but also the values and aesthetics of the two collaborating companies.
These interventions are accompanied by a dedicated website, Goodthingstaketime.com, and a free newspaper.
