Thomas Wakeford Film, by Yukiko

27/09/2012

Specializing in film, video and graphic design with an experimental edge, Yukiko is the Berlin-based creative studio of Johannes Conrad and Michelle Phillips. The studio's latest project has seen them collaborate with designer and Central St Martins graduate, Thomas Wakeford, on a unique short film showcasing Wakeford's Autumn/Winter 2012-13 Collection. Taking an unusual approach to the fashion video formula, the clip rides a bizarre path, presenting an epileptic sci-fi-inspired story about a girl, a drummer and a watchful owl, encapturing the viewer, trancelike, in its mulitdirectional narrative.

“From the first sketches we could already get a sense of the collection. We loved the architectural colour blocking contrasting with the oversized layered mesh Thomas was designing into the dresses. It had this really sharp, edgy but also gothic look and that got us thinking about moody and unnatural things… Thomas sent us pictures of Bosozoku motorcycle gangs at which point we knew we had to build something with a real crass and slight retro edge. We also felt the need to somehow mimic the shape, contrast and colour of his collection in the cast and overall set design.“  - Yukiko.
