Robert Longo: Man in the City
19/06/2013Filmmaker Matt Black focuses his lens on renowned New York artist Robert Longo, in the latest installment of his Reflections series. Best known for the charcoal-drawn silhouettes depicted in his Men in the Cities series, Longo has been creating iconic imagery since the late '70s, when his cinema-inspired enamelled aluminium reliefs made waves at the 1977 Pictures show at Artists Space in Manhattan. Throughout his career, it has been charcoal that the artist has kept coming back to as his preferred medium, and his hyper-real drawing style has reproduced countless visions of horror and beauty over the years, some of which have themselves become icons, used by brands to reach the collective psyche of mass audiences around the world. Take a look at the short clip above which sees Longo talk about his practice and how he pictures the development of his style over the years.
